"True health & wellness encompass not only the physical length and breadth of our bodies but also the height and depth of our soul and the mind." –Dr. Kranthi R Vardhan

We all know the basics:

Healthy eating, exercise and sleep are all important components to wellness.

But what sets apart those who truly thrive and achieve peak performance is taking care of their physical, mental, emotional and spiritual health.

It’s not enough just to focus on physical fitness; to be truly healthy and balanced, we must address the 4 dimensions of well-being.

Let’s talk about each dimension in greater detail.

The 4 dimentions of health & wellness:

1) The ‘Length’ of our health:

It is about having a long-term dedication to a healthy lifestyle. It’s about setting goals and staying committed to them, regardless of how difficult it might be to stay focused.

Make small, achievable changes in your daily habits that can add up over time to make a big difference.

Example: Eating a balanced diet, exercising regularly and sleeping for seven to eight hours per night are little steps that can help you get healthier over the long term.

“If you don’t like something, change it; if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it.” ~ Maya Angelou

2) The ‘Width’ of our health:

It refers to the day-to-day activities that promote wellbeing. This could include eating nutritious meals, getting adequate rest, participating in physical exercise and engaging in stress-relieving activities.

This is about setting time aside to let yourself relax and recharge. Look for activities that can help bring a bit of calm, such as taking nature walks, reading books or listening to music. It’s also important to take time every day to check in with yourself, pay attention to how you’re feeling and take some deep breaths.

“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow.” ~ Audrey Hepburn

3) The ‘Height’ of our health:

It is the level of self-awareness we are working towards – understanding how our thoughts, feelings and behaviours impact our wellbeing.

This aspect of health is about creating goals that will help you become even healthier and more fulfilled in life. Think about setting yourself career or fitness milestones that you can work towards. Having these aspirational goals can help motivate you to stay on track and keep your wellbeing momentum going.

“Watch your thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.” ~ Lao Tzu

4) The ‘Depth’ of our health:

It is honouring our spiritual side – understanding that being physically healthy is only part of the equation and that taking time to appreciate the grandeur of life will help bring balance to our existence.

“Spread love everywhere you go: First of all, in your own house… Let no one ever come to you without leaving better and happier.” ~ Victor Hugo

If we take time to understand and make use of the four dimensions of health and wellness, we can ultimately achieve peak performance and lead more fulfilling lives.
