The Ayurvedic Clock – Healing by the Hour
Did you know your body follows a biological clock that Ayurveda described thousands of years ago? This clock is divided into dosha time zones, and living in sync with it can transform your energy, digestion, and sleep.
Ayurvedic Time Cycle
Ayurveda divides the day into three dosha periods, each repeating twice in 24 hours:
6 am – 10 am | Kapha Time
Heavy, slow, stable energy.
Ideal for gentle exercise, yoga, and a warm breakfast.
Avoid oversleeping — it increases lethargy.
10 am – 2 pm | Pitta Time
Strong digestive fire (Agni) is at its peak.
Best time for your largest meal.
Also a good time for focused mental work.
2 pm – 6 pm | Vata Time
Creative, mobile energy.
Good for brainstorming, planning, and light snacks.
6 pm – 10 pm | Kapha Time
Body starts slowing down.
Best time for light dinner and winding down.
10 pm – 2 am | Pitta Time
Internal cleansing and repair happen.
Sleep before 10 pm to let the body detoxify properly.
2 am – 6 am | Vata Time
Light, alert energy.
Ideal for meditation, pranayama, and spiritual practices.
Why It Matters
Modern science now calls this circadian rhythm, but Ayurveda knew long ago — when you do something can be as important as what you do. Aligning meals, sleep, and work with your dosha clock improves digestion, immunity, and mental clarity.
Dr. Vardhan’s Tip:
Try eating your heaviest meal at lunch for one week and notice how much lighter and fresher you feel in the evening.
