Ayurvedic Eye Care – Nurturing Your Vision Naturally

Namaste Wellness Seeker,

In this digital age, our eyes are constantly under strain — from screens, stress, poor sleep, and environmental pollution. Ayurveda, with its timeless wisdom, offers a beautiful system of eye care that not only preserves vision but also rejuvenates the eyes and calms the nervous system.

In this Issue #151, Let’s explore Netra Tarpana, Triphala washes, and simple daily habits to keep your eyes healthy, bright, and vibrant.

Eyes in Ayurveda – The Pitta Connection

According to Ayurveda:

  • Alochak Pitta (a sub-type of Pitta dosha) governs the eye function.

  • When Pitta is balanced, vision is sharp, perception is clear, and the eyes stay bright.

  • Overuse of eyes, anger, heat, and excess screen time aggravate Pitta, leading to dry, red, itchy, and tired eyes.

Netra Tarpana – Nourishing Oil Bath for the Eyes

Netra Tarpana is a rejuvenating Ayurvedic therapy where medicated ghee is retained over the eyes using a flour boundary.
Duration: ~10–15 minutes
Recommended for:

  • Computer vision syndrome

  • Dry, itchy, or burning eyes

  • Poor vision or eye fatigue

  • Early cataract

  • Excessive tear production or night blindness

Ghee used: Mahatriphala Ghrita, Jeevantyadi Ghrita, or plain cow ghee

Benefits:

  • Improves eyesight

  • Relieves dryness and fatigue

  • Reduces eye strain and dullness

  • Cools and soothes irritated eyes

  • Enhances clarity and depth of vision

Triphala Eye Wash

Triphala is a Rasayana for the eyes.
How to use:

  • Soak 1 tsp Triphala in a glass of water overnight.

  • In the morning, strain with a muslin cloth.

  • Use this decoction to wash your eyes or as an eye drop (under guidance).

Benefits:

  • Prevents infections

  • Reduces redness and irritation

  • Strengthens vision over time

Daily Ayurvedic Tips for Eye Care

  1. Apply Anjana (Collyrium): Herbal eye liners made from Triphala or Yashtimadhu

  2. Padabhyanga (Foot Massage): Calms Vata and supports eye health

  3. Wash eyes with cold water upon waking up (never immediately after meals!)

  4. Blink consciously and follow 20-20-20 rule for screen users (Every 20 mins, look 20 feet away for 20 secs)

  5. Eat ghee, Amla, leafy greens, and carrots regularly

  6. Avoid reading in dim light or lying down

From Ayurvedic Texts

"Netra sevanam rasayanaanaam |
Sarvendriyaanam netra meva pradhanam."
— The eyes are the prime among all sense organs, and their protection is a Rasayana in itself.

Final Note

Healthy eyes reflect a healthy mind.
Let your eyes not just see—but sparkle—with the clarity that only Ayurveda can offer.
Give them 10 minutes of love each day, and they’ll thank you for life.

In the next issue, we’ll explore how Ayurveda supports emotional health and mental calmness.

Until then,
Stay balanced. Stay radiant.
