Ayurvedic Eye Care – Protecting Your Vision Naturally in the Digital Age
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the 144th edition of our Ayurvedic Wellness newsletter! In today's screen-heavy lifestyle—whether it’s phones, laptops, or TV—our eyes are overworked and under-cared for. Dryness, strain, blurry vision, burning, or even headaches are now common complaints.
In Ayurveda, the eyes are a Pitta-dominant organ, deeply connected to the fire element and the health of Alochaka Pitta.
This edition focuses on simple and powerful Ayurvedic practices to protect, nourish, and rejuvenate your eyes—naturally, gently, and consistently.
1. Netra Prakshalana (Eye Wash)
Rinse your eyes daily with cool Triphala decoction or rose water diluted in sterile water to clear dust, heat, and strain.
2. Padabhyanga (Foot Oil Massage)
Massaging feet with castor oil or ghee before bedtime improves vision by grounding excess Pitta and Vata.
3. Splashing Cold Water on Eyes
Every morning and evening, splash cool—not icy—water on closed eyes to refresh and activate circulation.
4. Practice the 20-20-20 Rule with a Twist
Every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds—and then palming (rubbing hands and placing over closed eyes) for a warm rest.
Soothing Oils & Drops for Eyes
Anjana (Herbal Kajal): Prepared from Triphala, it cools and strengthens vision.
Netra Tarpana (Ghee Bath for Eyes): A clinical therapy that deeply nourishes optic nerves and tissues.
Nasal Drops (Nasya): 2 drops of Anu Taila or Shadbindu Taila into each nostril every morning supports eye and brain health.
Eye-Strengthening Ayurvedic Diet
Include:
Amla (Indian gooseberry): Rejuvenates eye tissues, rich in vitamin C
Ghee: Nourishes Alochaka Pitta and improves clarity
Carrots, spinach, beetroot, coriander, pumpkin seeds
Black raisins, figs, soaked almonds, and saffron
Avoid:
Excess fried foods, sour pickles, fermented items, and spicy, salty dishes—they aggravate Pitta
Late-night dinners or working past 10 PM
Herbs for Vision Support
1. Triphala:
The cornerstone herb for eye health—cleanses, rejuvenates, and balances all three doshas.
2. Yashtimadhu (Licorice):
Soothes inflamed eyes and supports retinal strength.
3. Haritaki:
Helps in cleansing and reducing oxidative stress in eye tissues.
4. Saptamrita Lauh:
A classical Rasayana that nourishes the eyes and improves clarity and night vision.
Simple Eye Yoga Practices
Palming: Deeply relaxing and instantly reduces strain
Trataka (Candle Gazing): Improves concentration and eye stability
Eye Rotation Exercises: Up-down, side-to-side, and circular movements lubricate eye muscles
Blinking Consciously: Especially during screen time to maintain tear film
Lifestyle Tips for Eye Health
Sleep by 10 PM – Night is Pitta time; staying up strains the liver and vision
Cut screen time 1 hour before bed – Supports melatonin release and ocular rest
Wear protective glasses in harsh sunlight – Prevents excess Pitta from accumulating
Ayurvedic Therapies for Eye Rejuvenation
1. Netra Tarpana:
A ghee-based therapy that bathes the eyes—used for dryness, fatigue, and optic nerve nourishment.
2. Shirodhara:
A gentle stream of oil on the forehead—relieves stress and mental fatigue affecting the eyes.
3. Panchakarma Detox:
Helps clear excess Pitta and rejuvenates liver-health-linked vision clarity.
