Thyroid & Endocrine Balance: The Silent Hormonal Orchestra

Dear Readers,

Welcome to the 174th edition of our Ayurvedic Wellness Newsletter.

After understanding Pakvashaya (Colon) as the root of Vata, we now move upward to a system that silently governs energy, metabolism, mood, fertility, growth, and aging:

The Endocrine System — with special focus on the Thyroid.

In modern medicine, thyroid disorders are seen as isolated hormonal problems.
In Ayurveda, they are signs of deep imbalance in Agni, Doshas, and Dhatus.

Thyroid in Ayurveda — No Gland, But a Clear Concept

Ayurveda does not name the thyroid gland anatomically, but describes its function through:

Agni (metabolic fire)
Udana & Samana Vata
Kapha regulation
Rasa & Meda Dhatu metabolism
Galapradesha (throat region)

When Agni slows → Hypothyroidism
When Agni becomes erratic → Hyperthyroidism

Thyroid disease is Agni disease.

Early Signs of Thyroid & Endocrine Imbalance

Hypothyroid tendency:

• Weight gain
• Fatigue and sluggishness
• Cold intolerance
• Hair fall, dry skin
• Constipation
• Depression
• Menstrual irregularities

Hyperthyroid tendency:

• Weight loss
• Palpitations
• Heat intolerance
• Anxiety, irritability
• Excess sweating
• Tremors
• Sleep disturbances

Ayurveda sees both as loss of rhythm, not just hormone excess or deficiency.

Root Causes According to Ayurveda

• Weak or disturbed Agni
• Chronic stress (Vata–Pitta imbalance)
• Kapha accumulation in neck & chest
• Irregular eating habits
• Excess cold, raw, processed foods
• Suppressed emotions
• Poor gut health

The thyroid reflects the state of digestion, emotions, and routine.

Ayurvedic Herbs for Thyroid & Hormonal Balance

Kanchanara – Reduces Kapha stagnation in glandular tissue
Guggulu – Improves metabolism and tissue circulation
Ashwagandha – Regulates stress-induced hormonal imbalance
Trikatu – Rekindles Agni
Guduchi – Balances immunity and inflammation
Brahmi – Supports hypothalamic–pituitary axis

Herbs are chosen based on Dosha dominance, not just lab values.

Diet for Healthy Hormonal Rhythm

Favour:
• Warm, cooked foods
• Spices like ginger, black pepper, cumin
• Seasonal vegetables
• Adequate protein
• Ghee in moderation

Avoid:
• Excess cold foods
• Raw salads at night
• Processed and packaged foods
• Skipping meals
• Late-night eating

Hormones thrive on regularity and warmth.

Lifestyle Practices for Endocrine Harmony

• Fixed meal timings
• Early sleep (before 10:30 PM)
• Abhyanga (oil massage)
• Gentle yoga (neck, chest opening postures)
• Pranayama — especially Nadi Shodhana
• Stress reduction

Routine is hormonal medicine.

Vardhan’s Tip of the Week

Do not chase TSH numbers alone.
Treat digestion, sleep, stress, and routine — hormones follow.

Dr. Vardhan Says

“Thyroid disorders are not diseases of the neck.
They are reflections of disturbed metabolism, stress, and lifestyle imbalance.”

This is why long-term healing needs Ayurvedic root correction, not lifelong suppression.

Final Thoughts

The endocrine system is an orchestra.
The thyroid is its conductor.

When digestion, emotions, and routine are aligned,
hormones find their natural rhythm.
