“Artava Dhatu: The Ayurvedic Foundation of Women’s Hormones, Cycles & Vitality”
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the 172nd edition of our Ayurvedic Wellness Newsletter.
After understanding Shukra Dhatu (male vitality), it is only appropriate that we now turn our focus to its equally powerful counterpart:
Artava Dhatu — the essence of feminine health.
In Ayurveda, a woman’s health is not judged by age, weight, or appearance—
it is understood through the quality of her Artava.
When Artava is balanced, a woman experiences:
✔ Regular cycles
✔ Emotional stability
✔ Fertility and strength
✔ Radiant skin
✔ Calm confidence
When disturbed, the entire system feels off balance.
What is Artava Dhatu in Ayurveda?
Artava Dhatu represents more than menstruation.
It governs:
• Menstrual health
• Ovulation and fertility
• Hormonal balance
• Emotional stability
• Creativity and intuition
• Ojas formation
Artava is the final expression of nourishment in women, just as Shukra is in men.
Healthy Artava = Healthy woman.
Early Signs of Artava Dushti (Imbalance)
Ayurveda identifies disturbances much before scans and hormone reports:
• Irregular periods
• Painful menstruation
• Excessive or scanty bleeding
• PMS, mood swings, irritability
• Acne or pigmentation
• Hair fall
• Fatigue around periods
• Difficulty conceiving
• White discharge or infections
These indicate Vata, Pitta, or Kapha imbalance affecting Artava.
Why Artava Gets Disturbed — Ayurvedic Causes
The most common root causes include:
• Irregular meals and poor digestion
• Excess stress and emotional suppression
• Late nights and sleep deprivation
• Excess spicy, fried, or junk foods
• Repeated hormonal interference
• Over-exercising or under-nourishment
• Ignoring rest during menstruation
Ayurveda teaches:
“Artava reflects Agni, mind, and lifestyle.”
Ayurvedic Herbs That Support Artava Dhatu
Shatavari – The queen herb for women’s health
Ashoka – Regulates cycles and bleeding
Lodhra – Supports uterine tone
Guduchi – Balances immunity and hormones
Aloe vera (Kumari) – Supports ovulation and digestion
Dashamoola – Reduces pelvic inflammation
These herbs work gently, correcting the root imbalance.
Diet for Healthy Menstrual & Hormonal Balance
Favour:
• Warm, freshly cooked food
• Ghee in moderation
• Rice, wheat, moong dal
• Cooked vegetables
• Dates, figs, raisins
• Buttermilk (daytime only)
Avoid:
• Cold foods and drinks
• Excess caffeine
• Processed sugar
• Skipping meals
• Heavy fasting
A nourished body supports balanced Artava.
Lifestyle Rules for Artava Protection
• Respect menstrual rest
• Avoid late nights
• Practice gentle yoga
• Abhyanga (oil massage) regularly
• Reduce emotional overload
• Maintain routine and rhythm
Women thrive on rhythm, warmth, and nourishment.
Vardhan’s Tip of the Week
Do not ignore digestion when treating menstrual problems.
Most gynecological disorders begin with weakened Agni.
Dr. Vardhan Says
“Women don’t suffer from ‘hormonal problems’—
they suffer from lifestyle patterns that disturb Artava Dhatu.
Restore the rhythm, and the body heals naturally.”
Ayurveda treats the woman—not just her reports.
Final Thoughts
Artava Dhatu is the heartbeat of feminine health.
When protected, it supports not only fertility but emotional resilience, creativity, and longevity.
Listen to your cycle.
Respect your rhythm.
Ayurveda has always honored the feminine intelligence of the body.
With balance and compassion,
