Eyes – The Windows of Health in Ayurveda
Dear Readers,
In Ayurveda, the eyes are considered a reflection of overall health. Governed mainly by the Pitta dosha (Alochaka Pitta), they need cooling, nourishment, and regular care to stay strong and radiant. In today’s world of long screen hours, poor sleep, and pollution, eye strain, dryness, and weak vision are becoming common issues.
Let us explore how Ayurveda protects and rejuvenates your vision.
Why Eye Health Matters
Pitta imbalance → burning, redness, migraines, sensitivity to light
Vata imbalance → dryness, twitching, dark circles
Kapha imbalance → heaviness, watery discharge, dull vision
By balancing these doshas, Ayurveda not only prevents eye disease but also improves clarity and brightness of vision.
Ayurvedic Practices for Healthy Eyes
Netra Tarpana – A rejuvenating therapy where medicated ghee is pooled over the eyes to nourish and restore vision.
Triphala – The classic eye tonic; Triphala water wash or Triphala ghee strengthens the optic nerves.
Rose Water / Gulab Jal – Natural cooling eye drops for daily relief from strain.
Cucumber / Aloe Pulp Packs – Reduces burning and dryness from screen use.
Proper Sleep – Essential to restore ocular Pitta and reduce strain.
Diet for Eye Health
Favor cooling foods: cucumber, coriander, leafy greens.
Add natural eye tonics: ghee, amla, carrots, beets.
Avoid excess spicy, oily, and junk foods that aggravate Pitta.
Vardhan’s Tip of the Week
The 5-Min Eye Cooling Ritual (daily after screen time):
Wash eyes with cool water.
Apply cotton pads soaked in rose water or cucumber juice for 5 minutes.
Finish with 7 slow palming rounds (rub hands, cover closed eyes).
Immediate relief from strain, and deeper sleep at night.
Dr. Vardhan Says
“When your eyes tire, the whole body slows down. Ayurveda teaches that clarity of vision is not only physical—it is also mental and spiritual. Care for your eyes daily, and you care for your perception of life itself.”
With clear vision and wellness,
