The Art of Nasya – Healing Through the Nose

Namaste Wellness Seeker,

In Ayurveda, the nose is not just for breathing – it is the gateway to the brain. This ancient understanding gave rise to a powerful therapy called Nasya, one of the five Panchakarma procedures. It involves administering medicated oils or powders through the nasal passages to cleanse, energize, and rejuvenate the body and mind.

In this issue #149, let’s rediscover the science and sacredness of Nasya Karma.

What Is Nasya?

Nasya is a daily or therapeutic practice where specific herbal oils, ghee, or powders are gently instilled into each nostril. This clears toxins from the head and neck region, strengthens sensory organs, and balances Vata and Kapha doshas.

Benefits of Nasya

  • Cleanses sinuses and prevents allergies

  • Improves breathing, especially in asthma and chronic sinusitis

  • Reduces stress, anxiety, and mental fog

  • Promotes deep sleep and sharper concentration

  • Enhances facial skin tone and slows down graying of hair

When and How to Do Nasya?

Ideal time: Morning, after brushing teeth and clearing bowels.

Simple Nasya Ritual:

  1. Lie down with your head slightly tilted back.

  2. Instill 2 drops of warm Anu Tailam (or prescribed Nasya oil) in each nostril.

  3. Inhale gently and stay in that position for 1-2 minutes.

  4. Spit out any oil that may reach the throat.

For chronic conditions, always consult your Ayurvedic physician for the right Nasya type and formulation.

  • Anu Tailam – for general well-being, sinus issues, mental clarity

  • Shadbindu Tailam – for hair growth, headaches, and allergies

  • Ksheerabala Tailam – calming for the nervous system

Ayurvedic Insight

According to Ashtanga Hridayam,
"Nasa hi Shiraso Dwaram" – the nose is the doorway to the brain.

Neglecting this powerful pathway can lead to diseases of the head and sensory organs.

Daily Nasya is like spring cleaning for your mind, senses, and emotions.

Final Note

Whether you’re fighting allergies, looking to improve memory, or just seeking peace of mind – make Nasya part of your daily wellness journey. Just a few drops a day can open new realms of clarity, calmness, and vitality.

In the next issue, we’ll explore an entirely different but equally profound topic in Ayurveda.

Until then,
Breathe in wellness. Breathe out balance.
